EXTERIOR RENOVATION OF THE BELVEDERE
The Belvedere Riverfront Plaza is the centerpiece of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The elevated walkway, overlooking the Ohio River, provides citizens with a breathtaking view of the bridges and Falls of the Ohio.
Over time, the outside concrete parapet wall began to crumble and became a hazard, with pieces falling on the interstate below. E-Z Construction won the bid to perform demolition and removal of 275,000 pounds of concrete and reinforcing from the vertical face of the overpass, which was 20’ above the I-64 and 70’ above the Ohio River. The project required rigorous coordination with safety, nightly traffic control, and careful disposal of materials
Due to weight limits, mini excavators had to be utilized to perform the difficult task of reducing the concrete walls to basketball sized pieces for disposal at the street level (45’ below the work surface). Night work was required to minimize disruption to the highway below.
New concrete reinforced walls were attached to the deck area and waterproofing of landscape areas over foam fill areas transformed the work area into landscaped beds. New, custom-made aluminum fencing with the City of Louisville fleur-de-lis logo was attached to the new concrete walls welcoming visitors to the city.
